Getting your license in Japan is similar to getting it in America but there are some obvious key differences. There still are various tests an aptitude test, a written test about the rules of the road, and the practical test within the driving test center. The aptitude test tests for color blindness and other physical qualities you would need to drive. Like in the US the written test you must pass with 70% but is a set of 10 true or false questions.
To get a license in Japan you would usually attend a driving school. It is much easier than just learning on your own and they work with you until you pass all the sections. and are flexible for all people. There are classes at night, or intensive classes for people with jobs or inflexible schedules. However these schools are also rather pricy.
The main difference come in the driving test which takes place on a driving course at the testing center. You should memorize the course and everything that that it contains so that you can be prepared and pass the test. Like in the US the proctor rides along with you as you drive. But it seems as if there are more instant fails in Japan than the US.. But then again you also need to not make obvious mistakes like forgetting to do simple things.
Because having a license means that you can drive and driving means a sort of freedom from having to rely on others I thing getting your license or learning to drive is a universal symbol for growing up and independence. We talked about how many of the things that constituted adolescent rites of passage were things that lessened dependence on parents and having your own way of going places is one of them. In both Japan and the US getting a drivers license is a sign of growing up and being independent.
